Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun est une chanson de Pink Floyd, parue en 1968 sur l’album A Saucerful of Secrets. On en retrouve une version en concert sur l’album Ummagumma (1969), ainsi que, de façon plus inattendue, sur le récent live de Roger Waters In the Flesh (2000). Elle est également présente sur la compilation Echoes, the Best of Pink Floyd (2001). Paroles et musique sont de Roger Waters.

Plusieurs vers de Set the Controls for the Heart of the Sun sont inspirés par d’anciens poèmes chinois, tous provenant du livre Poems of the late T’ang, un recueil de poésie chinoise traduit en anglais par A.C. Graham. La première édition date de 1965 et le livre est toujours distribué aujourd’hui.

« Set The Controls parle d’une personne inconnue qui pilote une soucoupe volante et qui est obsédée par l’idée d’un suicide dans le Soleil. Et elle “met le cap en direction du coeur du soleil”. »

Version de 8 min 28 s enregistrée le 6 mai 1968 à Rome. Le son est sublime pour l’époque et la prestation générale très bonne, notamment pour les cris de Roger.

Version de 14 min 9 s enregistrée le 11 mars 1973. Le son n’est pas terrible mais la version est originale. Pas forcément indispensable.

Version de près de 14 minutes enregistrée le 20 mai 1972 à Böblingen en Allemagne. Pink Floyd est en très très en forme et très très inspiré. Mason vient participer à la deuxième partie de l’instrumental central, ce qui n’est pas son habitude. Et puis un son irréprochable… Peut-être bien une des deux meilleures versions de tous les temps, avec la suivante !

Encore une très longue et très belle version qui s’étire sur plus de 16 mn, enregistrée à Rotterdam le 3 avril 1971. Ce concert, donné ce jour-là au Oude Ahoy Hallen de Rotterdam (on le trouve aussi sous le titre Ahoy Rotterdam) est d’ailleurs globalement un concert exceptionnel par la qualité des interprétations des grands classiques du Pink Floyd de cette époque.
